Indiana State Prison – Michigan City

The Indiana State Prison, located in Michigan City, Indiana, is a maximum-security facility established in 1860. It is the second-oldest prison in the state and has a rich history tied to the evolution of the penal system in Indiana.

Originally named “State Prison West,” it was built to alleviate overcrowding at the Jeffersonville facility. The prison spans 100 acres and has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the years. Today, it houses approximately 4,000 inmates, including all male death row prisoners in Indiana.

The prison has been home to some infamous inmates, including the notorious bank robber John Dillinger, who was paroled in 1933, and D.C. Stephenson, a former Ku Klux Klan leader convicted of murder. The facility also played a role in the ITV documentary “Inside Death Row with Trevor McDonald,” highlighting its operations and inmates.

The Indiana State Prison offers both contact and non-contact visitation options, with scheduling managed through the ViaPath platform. 

Over the years, the prison has implemented various programs, including educational initiatives and a cat adoption program, aimed at rehabilitation and community engagement. Despite plans to close the facility in favor of a new prison in Westville, recent reports indicate that it will remain operational beyond 2027.
