Estill Federal Correctional Institution is a medium-security facility with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp along the same property. FCI Estill is situated in Estill, South Carolina, in Hampton County. The prison houses around 1,218 male inmates. Although the FCI’s maximum capacity is 768, it now houses approximately 930 inmates. The Camp currently houses approximately 288 offenders, despite the fact that it was originally meant to house just 256 inmates. 

The entire facility, including the satellite camp, consists of 26 buildings constructed entirely of concrete/masonry. Although a warehouse and the Garage, Landscape, and Central Plant (GLCP) are located outside the protected components of the prison, they remain integral to the facility. Prisoners have access to four housing units within the FCI. Each of these residential units is divided into two wings. The Camp has two housing units, each with two wings. The institution is home to the Special Housing Unit.

The FCI maintains various types of convicts but specializes in those who have committed violent crimes. Prisoners who have not been convicted of violent offenses are housed in the satellite camp. Among the site’s 26 structures are a training and wellness center for employees, warehouses, landscaping facilities, powerhouses and garages, and firing ranges. The entire prison complex occupies 250 acres of land.

Several events have occurred in Estill Federal Correctional Institution in the past. In 2005, one of the FCI’s former correction officers was imprisoned on heroin possession and distribution charges. Following an investigation, it was determined that the officer intended to provide 5 pounds of heroin to one of Estill’s captives in exchange for $100,000. In November 2009, two FCI inmates got into a heated argument over a game of cards. Ernesto A. Martin, 41, stabbed the other inmate multiple times during the card game altercation. Martin was transported to Coleman United States Penitentiary as a result of the assault and attempted murder of the other prisoner. On May 26, 2011, another brawl erupted at the prison. The fight was far larger than any other in the facility’s history. Nine offenders were hospitalized, with two suffering life-threatening injuries. Paramedics were stationed at the facility to treat 50 inmates who sustained injuries. According to reports from the scene, inmates were hit with shovels, hoes, and rakes, resulting in serious injuries such as fractured bones.

Federal Correctional Institution Englewood is a multi-facility prison. It is located in Littleton, Jefferson County, Colorado. It has a low-security FCI, a minimum-security prison camp, and a detention center. FCI Englewood houses male offenders — with 164 inmates now at the Camp and 889 at the FCI and FDC. The institution can house up to 1151 convicts. The facility houses both convicted and non-sentenced inmates. FCI Englewood is around 320 acres in size. 

The FCI features two housing units, one with open dormitories and one with private rooms and a secure housing facility for people who require placement in the Special Housing Unit. The correctional institution is divided into two living sections where all prisoners are free to roam. Additionally, the Camp has two dwelling units. The Camp’s accommodation units have rooms that accommodate up to five guys. Typically, offenders at FCI Englewood range in age from 20 to 86.

When a prisoner arrives, he will be screened by the prison’s employees. This screening will decide the best course of action for the convict and recommend specific programs. Prisoners may enroll in the following programs: 

• non-residential and residential substance abuse
• drug education
• substance abuse
• sex offender treatment
• sex offender management
• forensic program

Englewood also offers religious services, reentry assistance, and computer services. Prisoners also have the choice of education. They can pursue various educational opportunities, including Adult Continuing Education, Vocational Training, and Release Preparation.

On April 2, 2012, the whole FCI Englewood campus was placed on lockdown following the discovery of a white, powdery material wrapped in an inmate’s postal envelope. The substance was discovered following standard inmate mail screening. After contacting a hazardous materials team, it was determined that the drug was perfectly safe. When it comes to prominent convicts of Englewood Federal Correctional Institution, Rod Blagojevich is currently serving a 14-year sentence there. Blagojevich, who served as governor of Illinois from 2003 to 2009, was sentenced to jail in 2011 after being found guilty of wire fraud, extortion, and bribery in connection with his effort to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat. Blagojevich attempted to sell the Senate seat vacated by Obama in order to get a higher-ranking government post and financial benefit.

Elkton Federal Correctional Institution is a minimum-security jail with a low-security satellite facility nearby. Around 2,297 male convicts are housed at the jail. The structure is made of cement blocks and contains a total of five housing units. Three housing units are available at the federal correctional institution, whereas only two are available at the satellite prison. Each unit is comprised of a two-story structure with residential space on both floors. Chain link fencing surrounds FCI Elkton. Numerous programs are available through the FCI and the FSL. A Sex Offender Management Program and a Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program are available at the satellite prison. Additionally, Elkton Federal Correctional Institution includes a Residential Substance Abuse Program. Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held in both Elkton locations.

In 2010, William J. Platz, a 61-year-old FCI Elkton inmate, was accused of sketching and disseminating photos of juveniles engaging in sexual activity. Platz passed these photographs on to another prisoner. Platz faced a federal grand jury in Cleveland, Ohio, for this offense. Platz pleaded guilty after his trial and was sentenced to more prison terms at Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution. Platz was first jailed in 2000 for child pornography and being a co-conspirator with Eric Rosser. Rosser was a member of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List until he was apprehended in 2001. Another well-known convict currently incarcerated at Elkton FCI is serving a 25-year term. Peter Gotti was convicted in 2004 of not just extortion but also plotting the murder of Sammy Gravano. Peter Gotti was John Gotti’s brother, who died in 2002. Following John’s demise, Peter Gotti became head of the Gambino crime family. After Sammy Gravano testified against John Gotti during his 1992 trial, it was assumed that Gotti was after Gravano.

El Reno Federal Correctional Institution is a medium-security prison located in Canadian County, Oklahoma. Plus, it has an adjacent minimum security satellite camp. The institution is exclusively for male criminals and now houses 1,226 inmates, 945 at the FCI and 281 at the Camp. While the prison currently houses 1,226 inmates, it was initially built to accommodate up to 936. The age range of FCI El Reno inmates is between 20 and 60 years. The prison is situated on 2,600 acres of land, 56 of which are surrounded by a security barrier. The FCI houses inmates in four housing units, including double occupancy cells. However, due to the facility’s increased capacity, some cells now contain three bunks. There is only one dwelling unit at the satellite jail camp. This housing facility is divided into four wings, each with small housing cubicles.

El Reno Federal Correctional Institution offers a variety of work opportunities for offenders. The prison is home to a UNICOR-run metal factory that employs inmates. In addition, FCI El Reno is home to one of the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ two dairy farm operations. The dairy farm enterprise uses numerous offenders — the penitentiary benefits from a Residential Drug Abuse Program. The institution’s medical team consists of 22 professionals who care for an inmate in need. Additionally, there are ten psychologists on staff to assist prisoners with mental health difficulties. In general, FCI El Reno encourages offenders to seek self-improvement through vocational training, religious services, counseling programs, and educational possibilities.

President Barack Obama paid a visit to El Reno Federal Correctional Institution in 2015. This was a watershed moment in El Reno’s history because it marked the first time a sitting president visited a federal jail. Additionally, major activity happened at the facility on December 19, 2004. Carlos Brewster, an inmate, escaped from the prison camp during this period. Brewster was not located for three weeks until he was apprehended by the US Marshals Service in an East Los Angeles fast-food restaurant. Brewster was sent to prison and sentenced to an additional 21 years in prison for possession and intent to distribute cocaine. In addition, Brewster was sent to a prison with a higher level of security. In August 2011, another prisoner escaped from the FCI. Joe Villarreal, the prisoner in question, was already serving a 147-month term for cocaine trafficking. Villarreal was apprehended in El Reno several hours after his escape. Additionally, it was determined that Villarreal was carrying a shank in prison before his flight. As a result, Villarreal’s sentence was increased by 46 months, and he was moved to a maximum-security jail.

In Edgefield, South Carolina, the Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution is a medium-security federal prison. Edgefield features not only a Federal Correctional Institution but also a minimum-security prison camp. Both the Camp and the FCI house male prisoners, totaling 1,830 detainees. Between the camp and the FCI, FCI Edgefield was initially meant to house 2,048 convicts. The Camp’s recommended capacity is 512 convicts, but the FCI can handle around 1536 inmates. Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution has three living units for convicts, while the Camp has four. Edgefield is a medium-custody facility for male offenders. The Camp holds inmates sentenced to minimum custody, out-of-custody, or community custody jails. The institution’s housing design was created with the express purpose of preventing sexual harassment throughout the facility to the best of the authority’s ability.

Edgefield Correctional offers a variety of programs that prepare convicts for life as a productive citizens on the outside. General Education Development, Adult Occupational Education, Adult Continuing Education, and English as a Second Language are all available to inmates. Additionally, the institutions provide a Residential Substance Abuse Program, a Parenting Program, and a Work Keys Program. Additionally, vocational training and courses in auto repair, computer skills, and culinary arts are available. Additionally, prisoners at Edgefield participate in various community service programs and work in the textile manufacturing industry. Edgefield Federal Correctional Institution provides mental health, dental, medical, and social services to its inmates.

There have been multiple instances of corruption at FCI Edgefield. For instance, in 2002, a prison officer was sentenced to three years in prison and seven years of supervision following his release to accept over $9,000 in bribes from convicts at the institution. It is alleged that this officer accepted bribes from inmates in exchange for promising to supply marijuana to the inmates. In 2010, two additional guards were punished for accepting bribes from detainees. Gregory Conyers and Antonio Heath, two cops, took payments from convict Boyce Tisdale. The officers agreed to bring contraband into the institution in exchange for the money. As a result, the cops received prison sentences, and Tisdale was transported to the Butner Federal Correctional Complex.

There is a low-security federal correctional institution, a minimum-security satellite camp, and a detention center at Dublin Federal Institution. FCI Dublin is a female-only prison located in Dublin, Alameda County, California. The facility now houses 1,169 inmates, 973 at the FCI and 196 at the Camp. FCI Dublin features three distinct housing structures. Each structure comprises two pods. Each pod contains 56 or 61 two-celled units. There are sixteen beds available in the Special Housing Unit. The detention center has 122 cells, three of which are reserved for offenders requiring placement in the FDC’s Special Housing Unit. The prison camp has two housing units. These housing modules host up to 328 convicts in the open bay and multiple occupancy quarters.

To assist prisoners in becoming law-abiding citizens, FCI Dublin offers a variety of programs and services that assist inmates in adjusting to a more citizen-like lifestyle. Pre-GED, GED, and English as a Second Language program are available. Additionally, prisoners may participate in vocational training and other sorts of post-secondary education. Additionally, the institution offers a Residential Drug Abuse Program and a 40-hour substance abuse education and intervention program. The institutions also offer religious services and other therapeutic programs. Prisoners are frequently required to work in the Camp. The Camp arranges for the convicts to work on a variety of tasks. These initiatives are being undertaken on behalf of the Camp Parks Military Reserve and the National Park Service. Around 200 FCI Dublin convicts now have jobs thanks to a firm run by UNICOR.

On November 6th, 1986, one of FCI Dublin’s most infamous events occurred. On this day, Ronald McIntosh, a former prison escapee, landed a stolen helicopter in the FCI’s exercise yard. McIntosh was able to flee with the assistance of one of Dublin’s detainees, Samantha Lopez. Lopez was sentenced to 50 years in prison at Dublin Federal Correctional Institution for a big bank heist. Lopez and McIntosh met and discussed this escape plan years ago. The two escapists did not remain free for long. They were apprehended by FBI officers ten days after their escape. As a result, McIntosh received a 25-year sentence, and Lopez’s sentence was increased by five years.

Danbury Federal Correctional Institution, founded in 1940, is a medium-security facility located in Danbury, Connecticut. It also operates a satellite prison and camp. As with the FCI, the satellite prison (FSL) operates on a low-security basis, while the Camp (FPC) is staffed with minimum security personnel. The facility has over 1,000 male and female inmates, with 191 at the camp, 816 housed at the institution, and only 71 at the satellite prison. The FCI has dormitory and cell housing, allowing the institution to house approximately 946 male inmates. The satellite camp is designed to house about 155 female inmates in dormitories. FCI Danbury is comprised of 55 structures, including 14 distinct residences for staff members. The majority of inmates at Danbury have committed burglaries, drug offenses, or property-related offenses. Danbury initially housed only male offenders, but this policy was changed in 1944 to include female inmates. This is expected to change again in the near future, returning to the original all-male inmate policy.

FCI Danbury is a prison that many have heard of due to its notable incidents and involvement in pop culture. On July 7th, 1977, one of the most notable incidents occurred. At 1:15 a.m. on this day, a deadly fire broke out. The fire was started by an inmate’s pair of clothes. These garments were hung on wooden pegs in a prison laundry room. Due to the presence of fuels in the room, the fire spread rapidly. Although nearly an hour had passed since the fire was extinguished, it was already too late to save some inmates. Due to the fire’s size, numerous exits were blocked, leaving only one. Five prisoners died as a result of smoke inhalation as a result of the evacuation delay. This incident prompted Danbury and the entire federal prison system to reevaluate its fire safety protocols.

“Michael Rudkin” is a well-known face at FCI Danbury. Rudkin previously worked as a correctional officer in Danbury but is currently serving a sentence at USP Coleman. In 2008, it was discovered that, despite his marital status, Rudkin was having sexual relations with a female inmate. Further investigation revealed that Danbury was sexually involved with not one but several female inmates. As a result, Rudkin was sentenced to Coleman United States Penitentiary for having sexual relations with an inmate. Two years later, Rudkin was found guilty of hiring an assassin to kill the inmate he had sexual relations with, his ex-wife and her new boyfriend, and the Office of Inspector General agent assigned to his case. That said, his sentence increased to 90 years.

Cumberland Federal Correctional Institution, situated in Cumberland of Allegany, Maryland, is a medium-security prison with a minimum security satellite camp. Male inmates are housed at FCI Cumberland. The institution’s initial capacity was 1,395 inmates. Currently, the facility houses 1,283 inmates – 1,039 at the FCI and 244 at the Camp. The FCI consists of nine distinct housing units. Eight of the nine housing units are multi-occupancy, while the ninth is a Special Housing Unit. The Special Housing Unit has a capacity of 72 inmates. In addition, there are two buildings at the Camp that contain housing units. Each of these structures is two stories tall. In contrast to the institution, the Camp lacks a Special Housing Unit.

FCI Cumberland offers a variety of classes and programs to its inmates. General Education Development, Adult Basic Education, Adult Continuing Education, English as a Second Language, and the Correctional Learning Network are all educational courses. Not only does the institution offer programs to ensure that offenders receive an adequate education, but it also offers numerous vocational programs and apprenticeships fhttps://www.hopehousedc.org/programs/or its inmates. Apprenticeships in HVAC, plumbing, culinary arts, landscaping, painting, welding, and mechanics are available to prisoners. In addition, the Hope House Book Reading program, parenting classes, and the Father’s Camp program have all benefited offenders in the past. Both the camp and the institution offer programs to assist individuals who are struggling with substance abuse. Additionally, the psychology department helps offenders who are having difficulty adjusting to their incarceration. FCI Cumberland, in general, works to prepare inmates by gradually acclimating them to real-world concepts.

They allow inmates to utilize the facility’s various services. Offenders are exposed to dental, mental, and health care, as well as social services. These services enable the prison to assist inmates in times of need. The prison’s unique design allows inmates to shower and perform other private functions, such as changing, in a manner that minimizes the likelihood of inmate-inmate conflict. Additionally, to the offender’s benefit, there is a four-cell medical unit where inmates will be housed and observed if they have been sexually assaulted or require protection from sexual assault.

Coleman Medium Federal Correctional Institution is a medium-security facility located in Sumterville, Sumter County, Florida. It is connected to a nearby prison camp. Male inmates are housed in prison, while female inmates are housed in the camp. The facility has 1,913 inmates, with 381 female detainees kept in a minimum-security satellite camp and more than 1,500 male offenders. The medium jail is designed to hold 1536 inmates. The female satellite prison camp has a capacity of 512 inmates. Except for the housing, the institution’s layout is nearly identical to that of Coleman Low Federal Correctional Institution. Offenders are confined in three separate four-story buildings at FCI Coleman Medium. There are a total of 12 housing units. Housing units are divided into wings, each of which contains 64 cells. Normally, cells house two convicts. The prison camp features one housing structure identical to one in FCI Coleman Low, where the unit is divided into two wings with 64 cells each.

Both the camp and the facility, like the other facilities on the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, compel prisoners to participate in educational classes, vocational programs, and jobs. Upon their arrival, inmates are assessed by the education department to decide which courses would be most beneficial to them. FCC Coleman mandates inmates who do not already possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent to obtain a GED certificate. Monday through Friday, academic classes are held. Offenders who do not speak English as a first language will be allowed to enroll in a class that will teach English as a second language.

Additionally, the institution offers parenting classes and apprenticeships. Eight different apprenticeship programs are provided at FCI Coleman Medium to prepare convicts interested in learning more about a typical work environment. Additionally, elective courses are given for offenders who may develop an interest in a particular field of labor or art. At Coleman Medium, elective subjects include horticulture, culinary arts, basic computer training, cosmetology, and business education.

The Coleman Low Federal Correctional Institution is located in Sumter County, Florida, along with the other prisons of the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex. Men are housed in the low-security FCI Coleman Low. Over 1800 convicts are housed in the facility, although it was initially meant to hold just 1536 inmates. There are 12 separate housing units in the facility. Prisoners can be housed in one of the three two-story buildings, each of which has four separate dwelling units. It is further divided into two wings, each of which has a total of 64 cells. The cells are meant to hold two inmates. However, some cells contain three beds because of the prison’s growing population. On average, inmates at the facility are between the ages of 19 and 81, and they typically remain there for 11 years.

Having a job and taking education classes are mandatory for all convicts. At the time of admission, inmates will be assessed to determine which educational programs are best suited for them. Inmates are also required to hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent from the Education Department. To acquire this certificate, a convict must have either a high school diploma or a GED. An English language learning program is available for inmates who do not speak English as their first language. Every day of the week, classes are held.

Inmates at Coleman Low Federal Correctional Institution can enroll in eight different apprenticeship programs. A variety of optional classes are offered to offenders as a means of helping them become more prepared for their future careers at the facility. Culinary Arts; Horticulture; Cosmetology; HVAC; Custodial Maintenance; Electrical work are among the elective courses available. Programs for parents are also offered for individuals who think they would benefit from this course.
