Great Plains Correctional Institution

Located in McRae, Georgia, the McRae Correctional Facility has played a significant role in the correctional system since its establishment. This low-security prison for men, privately managed by CoreCivic, has provided confinement and rehabilitation services for inmates since 2000. However, recent developments have brought changes to its operations.

The facility, situated approximately 4.5 miles from Telfair State Prison, has been an integral part of the correctional landscape in Georgia. Its capacity of about 1,400 inmates has served as a crucial component in the state’s broader correctional system. Throughout its years of operation, McRae Correctional Facility has aimed to maintain security while promoting inmate rehabilitation.

However, it is essential to note that the McRae Correctional Facility is no longer operating. Following the end of its contract with the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) on November 30, 2022, the facility ceased its operations. Consequently, the closure of the facility resulted in the layoff of 252 employees, impacting the local community.

In its active years, the facility had strict protocols for handling inmate mail, which needed to include the complete name, registration number, and facility address. Similarly, visiting hours were established to allow inmates to maintain connections with their loved ones.

While McRae Correctional Facility has served its purpose in the past, its closure marks the end of an era. The impact it has had on the local community, both socially and economically, should not be overlooked. As the correctional landscape continues to evolve, it is essential to recognize the contributions and changes that facilities like McRae Correctional Facility have made to pursue justice and rehabilitation.

For further information or inquiries, contacting the BOP or the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is recommended.
