Edinburgh Correctional Facility

The Edinburgh Correctional Facility, located within Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana, is a minimum-security prison managed by the Indiana Department of Correction. Established in 1991, the facility houses up to 344 adult male inmates.

It is one of Indiana’s Level 1 facilities, meaning inmates work outside the prison grounds during the day. The facility is unique for its integration with the military base, where inmates contribute to maintaining the 3,600-acre grounds, as well as working with the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Department of Natural Resources.

The facility’s history is rooted in its location. During World War II, Camp Atterbury served as a detention center for prisoners of war. Post-war, the site transitioned into a military training camp, and later, in 1982, became a work-release center. By 1991, it was officially renamed the Edinburgh Correctional Facility.

Inmates at Edinburgh must have a clean disciplinary record and less than four years remaining on their sentence. The facility offers various programs, including behavior modification, parenting classes, and vocational training, such as the Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program.

Visitation is permitted four days a week:

• Sunday, Monday, Friday, and Saturday

The facility’s infrastructure includes renovated World War II-era barracks and newer buildings completed in 2007. Despite its minimum-security status, Edinburgh is fenced to separate it from the military camp. The prison emphasizes rehabilitation and reintegration, preparing inmates for life beyond incarceration.
