Hudson Correctional Facility
Hudson Correctional Facility, located in Hudson, New York, has undergone significant transformations since its inception. Originally established in 1877 as the House of Refuge for Women, it was the first reformatory for women in New York and a pioneering institution for gender-specific penal practices in the United States. The facility was designed to rehabilitate young women through a system of indeterminate sentences, focusing on reform rather than punishment.
In 1904, the institution evolved into the New York State Training School for Girls, accommodating incorrigible girls aged 12 to 15. This transformation marked the facility as a leading juvenile detention center. During its operation, it housed notable figures such as Ella Fitzgerald, who spent time there in her youth. The training school became a hub for pioneering social work and psychological research until it closed in 1975.
The following year, the site was repurposed as the Hudson Correctional Facility, a state prison for adult men. However, in 2016, a new directive shifted its focus once again. It now serves as a juvenile detention center, housing medium- and minimum-security male youths aged 16 and 17, as well as females, following a state mandate to separate minors from adult prisoners.
Today, the facility’s historic buildings stand near Hudson’s bustling business district, maintaining a capacity that adapts to its current role. While it no longer detains adult males, it continues to play a critical part in the state’s correctional system.
