Youthful Offender System
The Youthful Offender System (YOS), located in Pueblo, Colorado, is a unique correctional facility established in 1994 following legislation passed in 1993. Designed to rehabilitate young offenders aged 14 to 19, YOS offers a structured, four-phase program aimed at preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society.
These phases include Orientation and Training, Institutionalization, Pre-Release, and Community Supervision. The facility accommodates up to 256 inmates and houses both male and female offenders who have been convicted of violent felonies, excluding Class 1 felonies.
YOS operates under the Colorado Department of Corrections and is known for its focus on education and rehabilitation. Over 80% of its inmates leave with a high school diploma, and the facility boasts one of the lowest recidivism rates in the state, with only 20% of offenders reoffending within three years. Sentences at YOS range from two to seven years, and participation is contingent upon a judge’s recommendation based on the offender’s age and potential for rehabilitation.
Visitation at YOS is available on:
- Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 8:30 a.m. –11:30 a.m. & 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Visitors will be processed into the facility between 8:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. for the morning session and between 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for the afternoon session.
