Stringfellow Unit in Rosharon
The A.M. “Mac” Stringfellow Unit, located in Rosharon, Texas, is a correctional facility managed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Originally opened in July 1908 as the Ramsey II Unit, it was renamed in 2006 to honor Alfred McIntyre “Mac” Stringfellow, a former TDCJ board chairman. The unit is part of the larger Ramsey Prison Farm, which spans over 16,000 acres and includes two other facilities: the Ramsey and Terrell Units.
The Stringfellow Unit has a capacity to house 893 inmates, with an additional 319 inmates accommodated in its trusty camp. It primarily holds offenders classified as G1 to G4, which range from minimum to medium security levels. The facility is also notable for its historical significance, as it was originally part of a system of prison farms established on former plantations.
Visitation at the Stringfellow Unit is an integral part of maintaining inmate connections with family and friends. Visitors are required to confirm the visitation schedule and ensure they are on the approved visitors list before traveling. Each inmate is allowed one visit per weekend, and visits must comply with TDCJ guidelines, including dress codes and restrictions on prohibited items. As of November 2025, visitors are encouraged to check the TDCJ website or contact the unit directly for the latest visitation updates.
The Stringfellow Unit is also within the attendance zone of Alvin Community College, providing educational opportunities for inmates. Its long history and role in the Texas correctional system make it a significant institution in Brazoria County.
