Lopez State Jail in Edinburg

Lopez State Jail, officially the Reynaldo V. Lopez State Jail, is a state-operated facility near Edinburg, Texas. Opened in November 1997 and managed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, it serves male inmates in state jail custody and select prison custody levels. The unit sits about 10 miles north of Edinburg off Highway 281 in Hidalgo County and shares a 301-acre site with the Segovia Unit.

The jail can accommodate 903 inmates. It houses custody levels J1–J5 and G1–G2, plus transient populations. Lopez emphasizes short-term incarceration with a focus on stability, accountability, and reentry. Educational and vocational options include literacy and GED classes, CHANGES pre-release and cognitive intervention courses, as well as hands-on training in construction carpentry, culinary arts, and electrical trades.

Healthcare is provided on-site through ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health services, all on a single level and managed by UTMB. The jail also supports community projects for local agencies, the regional food bank, and Texas Parks and Wildlife.
