Sussex Work Release Center
The Sussex Work Release Center, or Sussex Correctional Institution (SCI), located in Georgetown, Delaware, is one of the state’s oldest correctional facilities, having opened its doors in 1931. Managed by the Delaware Department of Correction, SCI accommodates a diverse range of inmates, including those in maximum, medium, and minimum security classifications. The facility exclusively houses male inmates and has a total capacity of 1,206 beds, following a significant expansion between 1997 and 2000.
SCI is not just a place of confinement but also a hub for rehabilitation and reform. The institution offers various programs to reduce recidivism and foster personal growth among inmates. These include educational opportunities, vocational training, spiritual and religious programs, and work assignments. Notably, SCI is home to the nationally recognized “KEY South” substance abuse treatment program, which provides intensive, discipline-based therapeutic care for offenders.
The facility also runs the Youthful Criminal Offenders Program (YCOP), designed to address the unique needs of younger inmates. These initiatives underscore SCI’s commitment to rehabilitation and its role in preparing inmates for reintegration into society.
