Pontiac Medium Security Unit

The Pontiac Medium Security Unit (MSU), part of the historic Pontiac Correctional Center in Illinois, was a Level 3 facility designed to house medium- to minimum-security inmates. 

Established in 1871, the Pontiac Correctional Center is one of the oldest prisons in the state and has served various roles over its long history. The MSU, often referred to as “the farm,” once operated as a working farm, producing food for the prison. However, the unit was permanently closed in 2022 due to operational challenges and shifting priorities within the Illinois Department of Corrections.

At its peak, the MSU housed 327 inmates, offering a more rehabilitative environment compared to the maximum-security units. Inmates in the MSU enjoyed certain privileges, such as having keys to their rooms and access to windows, which fostered a less restrictive atmosphere.

The closure of the MSU led to the transfer of its population to the maximum-security section of the prison, a move that has been met with criticism for increasing tensions and reducing the quality of life for inmates.

The Pontiac Correctional Center, as a whole, has faced numerous challenges, including aging infrastructure, staff shortages, and a high concentration of inmates with serious mental health issues. Despite these difficulties, the facility remains a significant employer in Livingston County and a critical component of Illinois’ correctional system.

As of the latest reports, the Pontiac Correctional Center operates at approximately 70.8% of its rated capacity, housing 551 inmates. The facility continues to adapt to the evolving needs of the correctional system while addressing concerns about inmate welfare and staff safety.
