North Idaho Correctional Institution
The North Idaho Correctional Institution (NICI) is a unique correctional facility located in Cottonwood, Idaho. With a rich history dating back to 1958, the site originally operated as a U.S. Air Force radar station. After the radar station closed in 1965, the property transitioned into a federal Job Corps center before being acquired by the State of Idaho in 1974 to address the need for targeted, rehabilitative corrections.
NICI is designed to give individuals a second chance through its focus on rehabilitation and personal growth. Primarily housing male residents under retained jurisdiction sentences, the facility offers an alternative to traditional incarceration. Judges often assign individuals to NICI to assess whether they might benefit from probation after completing rigorous programs, rather than serving full prison sentences.
Rehabilitation is at the heart of NICI’s operation. It has a strong emphasis on education, vocational training, and counseling to prepare residents for their return to society. Residents can work toward earning a GED, take part in dairy farming and construction training programs, and participate in substance abuse counseling. Many of these programs provide real-world skills and certifications, such as college credits, to help residents secure employment post-incarceration.
The facility is categorized as minimal-security and currently has the capacity to house 428 residents. The typical program length is about nine months, during which residents adhere to structured daily schedules packed with classes and treatment sessions.
Visitors play an essential role in supporting residents’ journeys, though visits must comply with strict regulations. According to the latest update, as of September 20, 2023, visiting schedules are subject to change, and potential visitors must follow NICI’s procedures to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
NICI embodies a progressive philosophy in corrections, focusing on second chances and helping individuals rebuild their lives within the community.
