Lawrence Correctional Center

The Lawrence Correctional Center is a maximum-security facility for adult male inmates, managed by the Illinois Department of Corrections. Located in Sumner, Illinois, this prison opened its doors in November 2001 and has an operational capacity to house 2,458 inmates. 

Built with security and rehabilitation in mind, the facility spans 364,000 square feet across 16 buildings and offers various programs to promote reentry preparation and reduce recidivism.

Initially a medium-security prison, Lawrence Correctional Center transitioned to maximum-security operations in 2024. It accommodates inmates on Administrative Detention status while providing dedicated units for protective custody and restrictive housing. Additionally, the prison is ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for inmates with disabilities.

Lawrence Correctional Center provides a wide range of programs to support inmate growth, including academic opportunities like GED preparation, technical education in culinary arts and construction, and self-improvement initiatives, such as anger management and victim impact programs.

• Sunday to Friday, in-person visits for the General Population, Restrictive Housing, and Level E take place between 8:15 AM to 12:15 PM
• Administrative Detention visits are from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and Protective Custody visits occur from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
• On Saturdays, the order shifts slightly, with Protective Custody scheduled in the morning, Administrative Detention mid-day, and General Population, Restrictive Housing, and Level E in the late afternoon.
