The Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF), located in Hutchinson, Kansas, is a state prison managed by the Kansas Department of Corrections. Originally established as the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory (KSIR) in 1885, the facility was designed to rehabilitate younger offenders through vocational training and education.

The reformatory officially opened in 1895 after overcoming significant construction delays. In 1990, the name was changed to Hutchinson Correctional Facility to reflect its broader mission.

HCF has a rich history of reformative practices, including the introduction of indeterminate sentencing and vocational programs like stonecutting. Over the years, it has evolved to house a diverse inmate population, with a current capacity of 1,784 inmates.

The facility offers various programs, including the Kansas Wild Horse Program, which trains wild horses, and community work initiatives like highway maintenance and state fair cleanup.

Visitation at HCF is an integral part of inmate rehabilitation. Visitors must complete registration paperwork provided by the inmates. The latest visitation schedule, as of March 2026, can be accessed through the Kansas Department of Corrections website.

HCF’s historical significance and ongoing commitment to rehabilitation make it a cornerstone of Kansas’s correctional system.
