Fox Valley Adult Transition Center
The Fox Valley Adult Transition Center (ATC), located in Aurora, Illinois, is a minimum-security facility dedicated to helping female inmates transition back into society. Originally opened in April 1972 as the Kane County Springbrook Tuberculosis Sanitarium, the facility was later converted into a correctional center. Initially housing male inmates, it transitioned to an all-female facility in August 2000, becoming part of the Women and Family Services Division.
The center is a four-story brick structure with administrative offices, counseling spaces, and educational facilities. It accommodates up to 128 residents, with a current population of 118 as of July 2025. The facility operates at 95.9% of its capacity, emphasizing its critical role in the Illinois Department of Corrections’ reentry programs.
Fox Valley ATC provides a structured environment where residents participate in educational programs such as Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED preparation, and community college courses. Vocational training, life skills workshops, and substance abuse counseling are also available. The center’s unique four-step level system encourages residents to achieve milestones in employment, education, and personal development, gradually granting them more independence.
Visitation at Fox Valley ATC requires prior registration, with the latest schedule available on the Illinois Department of Corrections website. The facility also features a toy room for residents to spend quality time with their children during visits, highlighting its family-focused approach.
By offering a continuum of support and resources, Fox Valley ATC plays a vital role in reducing recidivism and preparing women for successful reintegration into their communities.
