Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility
The Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility (CTCF) in Cañon City, Colorado, is the oldest prison in the Colorado Department of Corrections system. It opened its doors on January 13, 1871, as a territorial prison and transitioned into a state prison in 1876. CTCF stands as a testament to over 150 years of corrections history.
Encompassing a 150-acre site, with 20 acres securely fenced and overseen by six towers, CTCF currently houses up to 985 medium-custody Level III male inmates. This facility is known not only for its historical significance but also for its robust educational and vocational programs.
Opportunities include GED education, post-secondary courses, cognitive development classes, and apprenticeships in culinary arts, food service, laundry, and maintenance. The facility also supports rehabilitation by offering programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Restorative Justice.
CTCF is an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-)-designated facility ensuring accommodations for inmates with disabilities. Notable housing units include a 140-bed transitional unit and an infirmary with a 32-bed capacity for inmates with acute medical or mental health needs. The facility provides vocational opportunities in general maintenance, plumbing, and even license plate production through Colorado Correctional Industries.
Visitation is available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with designated times for different groups. Visitors for the general population may schedule visits on:
- Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
CTCF embodies a blend of historic legacy and modern correctional advancement. Once home to Colorado’s death row, it now focuses on rehabilitation programs, providing inmates with opportunities to rebuild their lives while maintaining public safety.
