Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) is situated in the arid landscape of Blythe, California. The prison, which occupies 125 acres within a larger 1,735-acre state-owned property, officially opened its doors on December 5, 1988, following groundbreaking in March 1987. Designed to house 1,738 inmates, CVSP’s current population stands at 2,733, reflecting the ongoing challenges of overcrowding.

CVSP is structured into four Level II Non-Designated Programming Facility Yards, alongside one Level I Non-Designated Programming Facility Yard. This setup accommodates a broad range of inmate needs and security levels, facilitating various rehabilitative programs. The prison is also equipped with essential infrastructure such as a fire house, water treatment plant, and vehicle maintenance garage, which support both CVSP and the neighboring Ironwood State Prison.

In terms of inmate programs, CVSP offers a comprehensive array of vocational training including air conditioning and refrigeration, auto mechanics, building maintenance, and welding. Academic opportunities are also robust, featuring Adult Basic Education, GED programs, and college courses. Additionally, the prison provides various reentry and behavioral treatment programs, such as substance abuse treatment, anger management, and family relations workshops.

The warden overseeing these operations is David Holbrook, who has been with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) for over 24 years. His extensive experience within the system has allowed him to implement and oversee numerous initiatives aimed at improving both staff and inmate outcomes.

Visitation at CVSP is an integral part of maintaining inmate morale and supporting rehabilitation.

Family visits occur in:

  • Private
  • In apartment-like facilities on the prison grounds
  • Typically lasting around 46 consecutive hours

This policy underscores the prison’s commitment to fostering family connections as a means of support and rehabilitation.
