The Anamosa State Penitentiary, located in Anamosa, Iowa, is a medium-to-maximum security prison with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1872. Designed in the Scottish Baronial Revival style, the facility resembles a medieval fortress with its crenelated towers and massive stone walls. Construction began in 1873 using stone from a nearby quarry, with labor provided by inmates. The prison officially opened in 1874.

Over the years, the penitentiary has housed some of the most notorious criminals, including serial killer John Wayne Gacy during the late 1960s. Today, it serves as a correctional facility with a capacity of 908 inmates, though it currently houses 1,226, reflecting overcrowding challenges.

The prison offers a variety of programs aimed at rehabilitation, including vocational training in welding, horticulture, and janitorial work, as well as educational opportunities for earning high school diplomas or GEDs. Inmates also participate in Iowa Prison Industries, producing goods like furniture and signage.

Visitors can explore the Anamosa State Penitentiary Museum, located just outside the prison walls. The museum showcases the institution’s history, the role of guards, and the construction of its iconic buildings.

As of March 3, 2026, the latest visitation schedule requires visitors to sign in at least 10 minutes before their scheduled time. All visitors aged 13 and older must use the Ameelio Connect app for scheduling
