Brockbridge Correctional Facility sits in Jessup, Maryland, and for decades it served as part of the state’s correctional network. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) ran the site. It began in 1966 as a minimum-security institution within the Maryland Correctional Pre-Release System, and it remained a fixture of Jessup’s cluster of state facilities until it closed in 2019.

The facility traces back to the Sandy Point Correctional Camp. When the camp moved to Jessup in 1966, it was renamed the Maryland Correctional Camp Center. In 1979 it was converted to medium security and became Brockbridge Correctional Facility. In 1988 it was reclassified as a minimum-security center. It also served as a reception center for the Maryland Correctional Pre-Release System, helping incoming inmates move through the process before placement.

Brockbridge was built around preparing people for release rather than long-term, high-security custody, but it was not free of problems. Staffing demands and security concerns affected the facility over the years. In 2009 it introduced a body orifice security scanner (BOSS) chair to detect hidden contraband. A fight that left several inmates with stab wounds once put the facility on lockdown, with visits canceled for the rest of that week.

The facility also had a constructive side. Inmates took part in beach cleanup efforts after storms along the Maryland coast. The facility hosted a comedy workshop that led to a talent night in 2011. Visitors from community and faith groups also came to the facility.

In 2019 the facility closed, and its inmates were moved to Dorsey Run Correctional Facility, another Jessup institution. The state has since discussed redeveloping the Brockbridge site into a pre-release, re-entry and workforce development center. Under that plan, men and women would be housed separately in the same building, with shared spaces for supervised programming, correctional education, and job training developed with private-sector employers.

Visits once gave families and friends a vital link to their loved ones at Brockbridge. Because the facility closed in 2019, it no longer holds regular visiting days. If someone you know was previously held here, contact DPSCS to find out where they are now and what the visiting schedule is at their current facility.

For inmate records, current facility assignments, or visitation rules, use the official DPSCS website or the Maryland inmate locator. Both let you search for people held across the state system, including those moved from Brockbridge.
