Southeast State Correctional Complex
Southeast State Correctional Complex, often shortened to SSCC, is a medium-security state prison for adult men in Wheelwright, Kentucky. The Kentucky Department of Corrections reopened the facility in December 2020 and runs it as the state’s 13th prison, leasing the property from its private owner. The complex sits on 111 acres in eastern Kentucky’s Floyd County and has nine buildings, including housing dormitories, an administration building, an education building, a visitation building, and a gymnasium.
SSCC is built to hold 621 inmates. It also gave the local economy a boost, bringing more than 270 new jobs to the region when it reopened.
SSCC’s mission centers on keeping Kentucky residents, staff, and incarcerated men safe while helping each person prepare for life after release. Through education, structured programming, positive social interaction, and real job experience, the facility works to reduce recidivism and support successful reentry into Kentucky communities.
Men housed at Southeast State Correctional Complex can take part in evidence-based programs designed to build stability and practical skills:
- Substance abuse treatment: a structured recovery program for inmates working to overcome addiction.
- Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT): a cognitive-behavioral program that encourages better decision-making and personal accountability.
- Educational courses: classroom learning to help inmates strengthen academic skills.
- Vocational training: a construction craft labor course that gives participants hands-on, job-ready experience.
Together, these programs give inmates a path toward steadier employment, healthier habits, and a smoother return home.
Visits at SSCC are by appointment only, so plan before making the drive to Wheelwright.
Visiting schedule: Saturdays and Sundays, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
