Maui Community Correctional Center

The Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC), located at 600 Waiale Drive in Wailuku, Hawaii, plays a crucial role in Maui’s correctional system. Established in the 1970s, the facility initially served a much smaller inmate population. However, as the needs of the community grew, MCCC found itself operating beyond its intended capacity, with overcrowding becoming a recurring issue.

The center’s design capacity allows for 209 inmates, but its operational capacity has been extended to accommodate 301. Despite these adjustments, MCCC consistently exceeds these limits, with recent reports indicating an inmate population of over 300. This overcrowding underscores ongoing challenges within the state’s correctional facilities.

One standout feature of MCCC is its dedication to rehabilitation and reintegration programs. The facility offers a range of initiatives aimed at helping inmates transition back into society. These programs include adult basic education, GED preparation, vocational training, parenting classes, and substance abuse treatment. MCCC also offers work furlough programs and extended furlough opportunities in collaboration with the Maui Intake Service Center.

Additionally, an innovative drug court program provides select inmates with in-house treatment followed by nine months of community-based care.

Efforts to modernize the facility have included safety improvements following a 2019 riot, and MCCC has begun construction on a 32-bed medium security unit tailored specifically for female inmates. This project aims to address gender-specific needs and relieve overcrowding.

To enhance family connections, the center allows video calls and non-contact visits. The latest visitation schedule update, from November 2024, requires visitors to pre-schedule appointments and adhere to safety guidelines, including mask usage.

The Maui Community Correctional Center continues to balance its mission of maintaining public safety while fostering opportunities for inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.
