Kauai Community Correctional Center
The Kauai Community Correctional Center (KCCC), established in 1977, is a key part of the justice system in Lihue, Hawaii. Located on Kuhio Highway, KCCC sits on 9.5 acres and serves multiple purposes. Originally built to house only twelve male inmates, the facility has expanded over the years and now accommodates up to 128 inmates, including both men and women. Those held at KCCC include pretrial detainees, parole violators, and those serving sentences for misdemeanors.
KCCC isn’t just a jail; it’s also a center for rehabilitation and community engagement. The facility offers various programs aimed at helping inmates reintegrate into society. Notable among these is the Lifetime Stand Program, which fosters discipline and personal growth through a structured regimen of exercises, education, and outreach activities. KCCC also provides education, religious counseling, substance abuse treatment, and cultural arts programs, helping inmates build skills for life after incarceration.
A standout feature of KCCC is its community service worklines. These programs allow inmates to contribute labor to local projects, benefiting county initiatives and non-profit organizations.
Additionally, the facility maintains a vegetable farm run by inmates. The produce often exceeds internal needs, allowing surplus fresh vegetables to be donated to community organizations, such as senior centers.
Visitation hours play an important role in maintaining inmate connections with family and friends. According to the latest update on April 6, 2022, visits are permitted on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Visitors must pre-register and adhere to health guidelines, including wearing masks. These rules are designed to ensure safe and meaningful interactions.
Through its programs and community contributions, KCCC serves as more than a correctional facility; it’s a place of growth, rehabilitation, and service.
