Manson Youth Institution
The Manson Youth Institution (MYI) is a Level 4 high-security correctional facility located in Cheshire, Connecticut. Dedicated to housing male offenders aged 14 to 21, MYI plays a crucial role within the Connecticut Department of Correction system.
It opened on October 12, 1982, originally known as the Cheshire Youth Institution, before being rededicated in 1985 in honor of John R. Manson, a former Commissioner of Correction. The facility, which spans 76 acres, is designed to accommodate up to 679 inmates, though its population fluctuates based on current needs.
The institution’s mission focuses on education and rehabilitation, emphasizing the development of skills and attitudes necessary for reintegration into society. Programs offered at MYI include educational classes, vocational training, addiction recovery services, and counseling.
A youthful offender mentoring initiative further supports inmates, fostering positive peer relationships, substance abuse awareness, and essential life skills. The facility also promotes an understanding of criminal culture and release planning to reduce recidivism.
MYI consists of ten buildings, each with three wings containing 12 cells, common spaces, counselor offices, and small kitchens. A notable addition is the Health, Education, and Training (H.E.T.) building completed in 1994, which provides classrooms, a gymnasium, a library, and medical facilities.
For families and friends, MYI offers both in-person and video visitation options. As of February 2025, all visits must be scheduled in advance. Juvenile inmates may have up to five visits per week, while adult general population inmates are limited to two, with a maximum of one visit on weekends.
The Manson Youth Institution remains committed to rehabilitating young offenders, preparing them to be productive, law-abiding citizens while addressing their educational and mental health needs in a supportive environment.
