Arizona State Prison – Kingman
The Arizona State Prison – Kingman, located in Golden Valley, Arizona, is a privately run facility under contract with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry. Opened in August 2004, the prison operates as a minimum- and medium-security facility with a capacity for up to 3,508 inmates. It is currently managed by The GEO Group, Inc., which assumed operational control in December 2015 following previous management under the Management and Training Corporation.
The prison consists of two separate units. The Cerbat Unit, designed for minimum-security inmates, can house up to 2,000 individuals. The Huachuca Unit is a medium-security facility intended for up to 1,508 inmates, including those convicted of sexual offences.
Over the years, the prison has implemented educational and vocational programs for inmate rehabilitation, such as carpentry, HVAC training, and culinary arts. Substance abuse treatment, anger management courses, and parenting workshops complement these initiatives.
The facility has faced challenges in its history, including high-profile incidents. Notable events include a 2010 escape involving three inmates, which drew widespread attention, and riots in 2015 that damaged parts of the prison and led to a management overhaul. Despite these incidents, the prison continues to function as part of Arizona’s correctional system, combining incarceration with rehabilitation efforts.
Arizona State Prison – Kingman plays a key role in Arizona’s effort to balance security, accountability, and rehabilitation within its justice system.
