Sterling Correctional Facility
The Sterling Correctional Facility (SCF) is the largest prison managed by the Colorado Department of Corrections, located in the northeast corner of Colorado, roughly 120 miles from Denver. Opened in June 1999, the facility is situated on a 765-acre site, with an 80-acre interior perimeter dedicated to its operational needs. Designed with multiple custody levels—ranging from Minimum to Close (Management Control Comprehensive)—SCF can house up to 2,488 inmates, making it a critical part of Colorado’s corrections system.
Over the years, the prison has played a central role in state correctional operations. Between 2011 and 2015, it temporarily housed Colorado’s death row inmates to resolve a lawsuit related to outdoor exercise facilities. Though these inmates have since been moved, the facility’s infrastructure and management exemplify its ability to handle high-profile and complex cases.
Today, SCF accommodates a diverse inmate population with varying custody needs, effectively helping the state manage its correctional demands.
Visitation at SCF is structured to ensure fair access for families and friends while adhering to operational regulations. Visits are scheduled in 28-day blocks, allowing for flexibility and equitable participation. The first session of 2025 began on January 6, highlighting the ongoing organization of these visits. Visiting slots must be reserved in advance, with up to three visits allowed per block. Weekend visits even offer opportunities for shared meals through local vendor deliveries, adding a personal touch to the experience.
Sterling Correctional Facility stands as a key institution within Colorado’s correctional framework. Its focus on maintaining security, fairness, and opportunities for rehabilitation underscores its mission of justice and public safety.
