Gowanda Correctional Facility

The Gowanda Correctional Facility was a medium-security prison for men located in Gowanda, New York, within Erie County. Established in 1994, this facility was constructed on land with a rich history, originally part of the Gowanda Psychiatric Center.

The psychiatric center itself was inaugurated in the late 19th century when the Erie County Legislature initiated a transformation of the site into a homeopathic state hospital. This transition laid the groundwork for what would later evolve into correctional facilities occupying the same grounds.

Gowanda Correctional Facility, along with its neighboring Collins Correctional Facility, became an integral part of New York’s prison system. It was notably one of the largest medium-security prisons in the state, with a capacity to house up to 2,300 inmates.

The institution was recognized for its significant contribution to inmate rehabilitation, featuring one of the largest sex offender counseling programs within the New York State prison system. This program underscored the facility’s commitment to addressing the specific needs of its inmate population, aiming for their eventual reintegration into society.

Despite its size and the programs offered, the Gowanda Correctional Facility was closed in 2021 as part of a broader state initiative to downsize its prison footprint, driven by decreasing inmate populations and a shift towards alternative sentencing methods.
