High Desert State Prison (HDSP)
High Desert State Prison (HDSP) in Nevada stands as the largest institution within the Nevada Department of Corrections. Strategically located in Indian Springs, this facility opened its doors on September 1, 2000. Designed to maximize officer safety and efficient inmate management, the complex spans approximately 1,576,000 square feet and is the cornerstone of what will become a sprawling Southern Nevada prison complex.
Initially built with a capacity of 2,671 beds, HDSP expanded in 2009, adding 1,344 more beds. Today, it can accommodate approximately 4,176 inmates, making it a critical component in the state’s correctional infrastructure. This expansive facility is overseen by Warden Jeremy Bean and supported by a robust team of four Associate Wardens, ten Lieutenants, thirteen Sergeants, roughly 400 security staff, and 67 support staff.
However, the current status of visitation at HDSP is suspended. While general visits are not permitted, attorney visits can be arranged by appointment, ensuring inmates retain access to legal counsel.
Beyond its primary function of incarceration, HDSP is committed to the rehabilitation and skill development of its inmates. The prison offers various educational programs, allowing inmates to pursue a GED, obtain a high school diploma, or even take some college courses.
Vocational training is another significant aspect of HDSP’s inmate programs, with opportunities in fields such as automotive mechanics, heating and air conditioning, and carpentry. These programs aim to equip inmates with the skills needed for a successful reentry into society.
Moreover, HDSP houses a Prison Industries building complex, spanning about 65,000 square feet. This facility includes six work bays, each around 10,000 square feet, equipped with camera surveillance and dining areas for workers. This setup provides inmates with practical work experience, further aiding their rehabilitation and future employment prospects.
