Nestled in the picturesque landscape of San Luis Obispo, California, the California Men’s Colony (CMC) stands as a prominent institution within the state’s correctional system.

Established to provide a structured and rehabilitative environment for inmates, CMC has evolved significantly over the years. This male-only state prison is divided into two separate complexes: the East Facility and the West Facility.

The East Facility is a Level III complex that houses medium-security inmates in five independent facilities (A, B, C, D, and H). These units are equipped to offer Enhanced Outpatient Program (EOP) and Correctional Clinical Case Management System (CCCMS) care.

Notably, Facility H is a specialized 50-bed Mental Health Crisis Unit providing round-the-clock mental health treatment. On the other hand, the West Facility caters to Level I and II inmates in a dormitory setting, also offering CCCMS care.

CMC is committed to inmate rehabilitation, offering a plethora of programs aimed at skill development and personal growth. Inmates can engage in various academic programs, including Adult Basic Education, GED preparation, and college degree opportunities. Vocational training is robust, with courses in auto mechanics, electronics, masonry, welding, and more.

Additionally, the institution provides specialized programs such as the New Life K-9, which trains service dogs for first responders with PTSD, and a firefighting program in collaboration with Cal-Fire.

As of the latest data, the California Men’s Colony can accommodate approximately 3,800 inmates. The institution is under the leadership of Warden Danny Samuel, who has been serving in this role since June 2022. Warden Samuel brings over 25 years of experience within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

Visitation at CMC is structured to maintain strong family connections, a crucial element in the rehabilitation process. Visits are allowed on:

  • Saturdays, Sundays, and designated holidays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Visitors are required to schedule their visits in advance through the VPASS system to ensure a smooth and orderly process.

The California Men’s Colony continues to play a vital role in the state’s correctional landscape, focusing on rehabilitation and successful reintegration of inmates into society.
