Roederer Correctional Complex

Roederer Correctional Complex (RCC) is a Kentucky Department of Corrections institution in Oldham County. It sits about 3 miles south of La Grange and roughly 20 miles north of Louisville. RCC is best known as the state’s intake hub for adult male offenders. It also runs treatment and work programs that prepare people to return to their communities.

RCC opened on August 28, 1976, as a 150-bed minimum-security work camp. Its original job was to run a 3,000-acre prison farm. In December 1987, the complex became a medium/minimum-security institution, holding 100 medium-custody and 152 minimum-custody inmates.

A second change came on May 1, 1989. RCC became the Assessment and Classification Center for the Kentucky Department of Corrections. Nearly every newly sentenced state prisoner now begins here, with the exception of those sentenced to death. Staff evaluates each person before he is placed at a permanent facility elsewhere in Kentucky. The complex is accredited by the American Correctional Association.

RCC houses a total of 1,238 offenders across several specialized units:

  • Assessment Center: 730 beds for men awaiting classification and placement.
  • Substance Abuse Treatment Program: 200 beds for participants building recovery and reentry skills.
  • Medium-security work crews: 200 offenders who support operations inside the inner perimeter.
  • Minimum-security farm crew: 108 offenders who work the 3,000-acre farm.

Together, these units keep RCC focused on classification, rehabilitation, and preparing people for life after release.

Staying in touch with family and friends is an important part of rehabilitation. RCC holds in-person visits on two weekends each month, and the weekends change from month to month. Visiting hours are 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, and the last visitors are admitted at 2:00 pm.

Visit days depend on the last digit of the inmate’s DOC number:

  • Odd-numbered months (January, March, May, July, September, November): odd-digit visits on Saturday, even-digit on Sunday.
  • Even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October, December): even-digit visits on Saturday, odd-digit on Sunday.

Assessment Center inmates get a maximum of one hour. They become eligible after 60 days at the center, and visitor applications open after 45 days.

Permanent inmates get a maximum of two hours.

Key visitor rules:

  • No more than three visitors per table, children included.
  • No money in the visiting room, and no vending is available.
  • All visitors are subject to a frisk, search, and body scan.
  • The dress code is strict. Visitors in non-compliant clothing may be turned away.

Virtual visits are booked online through Securus. Schedules can change or be canceled at short notice, so call RCC at (502) 222-0173 before you travel.

Directions tip: GPS may not take you to the institution’s mailing address. Navigate to the Oldham County Police Department at 1855 N Highway 393, La Grange, KY 40031. RCC is just past it, and a sign on the right points to the entrance road.

Roederer Correctional Complex is where many Kentucky inmates start their sentences. Its intake process and its programs both shape what happens later in an inmate’s time in the system. It is also one of several correctional institutions around La Grange and one of the area’s larger public employers.

Families can look up an inmate’s location and record through the Kentucky Department of Corrections’ KY Offender Online Lookup (KOOL). Visitation updates, policies, and forms are on the department’s official RCC pages.
